Dignity is easy to praise when it costs nothing. Fiction becomes interesting when a character must decide what dignity means under pressure—and what they are prepared to lose in order to preserve it.
Across both the Ashworth Series and The Right to Matter, characters confront systems that measure them by wealth, usefulness, status or compliance. Their most revealing choices occur when those measures conflict with their own sense of worth.
The question is not whether every character behaves honourably. It is whether they can recognise the moment when a compromise becomes a definition of who they are.
